The Myth of the Vent

Changing Your Home Air Filter every 90 Days Makes a Difference.

Changing Your Home Air Filter every 90 Days Makes a Difference.

Ok, we’ve heard this one before – “I close the air vents in the rooms I don’t use during the summer to help save energy.” Well, guess what? Closing vents in unused rooms can do more harm than good. According to a recent study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, “The reduction in building thermal loads due to conditioning only a part of the house was offset by increased duct system losses, mostly due to increased duct leakage.”

Plus, the extra pressure can cause damage to your AC system which will be much more costly than heating or cooling an unused room . With today’s typical forced-air heating and cooling systems, anything that restricts the air flow could lead to frozen coils, damaged condenser, or even motor failure.

Instead of closing off vents, consider changing the setting of your thermostat by a degree or two. For each degree cooler in the summer or degree warmer in the winter, your energy use will increase by 6% or more. In addition, change your home air filter on a regular basis, which will keep your air fresh and clean, and keep your system from clogging up.

Our Pets are Even More Sensitive About Our Service

"A house is not a home without a pet."

In the last several weeks, we have seen some incredible winter blasts of weather from coast to coast. So much cold and snow that in some cases we suspended shipments from our warehouse for a couple of days, just to let our Members in the midwest and areas along the east coast dig out. That actually prompted an email from one of our Members in Michigan who wrote, “I just saw your tweet about my air filter shipment and wanted to say thank you for giving us a heads up. It’s just that with all this snow, Peppy, our Terrier, hasn’t gotten to be outside much. Since he was recently diagnosed by our vet with bronchitis so we are very sensitive about the indoor air quality and to how often we change our air filters. Your service has been the best thing to help us do just that. Thanks again.”

What you may not know is that respiratory illnesses and even allergies in our pets can be caused by a reaction to something in the air -  sometimes seasonal or sometimes pet asthma triggers. In the cold winter months where we crank up the heat and spend more time indoors, but the importance of the air or furnace filter is sometimes forgotten. It is even more important in seasons of high central AC or furnace use (like summers and winter) to be diligent about replacing your filters. Because your pets lungs are more sensitive to allergens and toxins in the air and because they typically spend more time indoors than humans, poor indoor air quality can affect their health even more.

February is “Responsible Pet Owners Month” and one of the things you can do to help protect your fury friends is to make sure you change your home air filters on a regular schedule. If your dog is coughing or wheezing, don’t ignore it.  It could be a reaction to irritants within the respiratory tract or airway. With pets, most veterinarians recommend having your home air filters delivered at least every 60 days, due to the increase of dander and hair pets release into the air - in addition to the airborne contaminates contributed by the humans that live there. If your pets are mostly indoor animals, then you may even want to have your home air filters delivered more frequently with our service, say every thirty days. Protecting your indoor air quality also helps pets with chronic allergies, which if left untreated could result in secondary problems like hypertension and collapsing trachea. Obviously, taking this kind of preventative measures can help avoid those health conditions that can be much worse than the allergies or reactions themselves. For more information about how indoor air quality can affect your dogs and cats, talk with your veterinarian. Remember, we love the ones most that love us back!

Thank You for Your Trust. Thank You for Being a Member.

"Our Members trust us to deliver the best!" FAC CEO

When we were young, we were taught not to talk to stranger. From a young age, we were taught the concept of building trust. So it should come as no surprise that according to recent consumer online habits research, before we hit “add to cart” we sure want to know what others have to say about the product we are buying or the company from which we are purchasing that product.

What’s even better, getting objective opinions has never been easier for consumers. And if you don’t personally know someone who has used a particular product or service, you can do your own independent research based on the objective third-party experiences of million. What we have found is that when people are shopping for home air filters,  most shoppers do just that. In fact, most of our new Members come from referrals – a partner’s websites, friends they know, or even meeting our Director of Events, Britney, out at the Houston Aeros game. We understand there is a lot of confusing information out there about which air filters are the best. And since getting your air filters delivered as a subscription service is relatively new (we know because we started it), we rely on testimonials to share the benefits.

That is why our relationship with our Members is our number one priority. We know that when someone signs up for the Fresh Air Club’s home air filter subscription service that they want the best when it comes to their home indoor air quality – and they are trusting us with the health of their home and family! Take a Tip from Los Angeles Wilmington-Area Schools: Change Your Air Filters!

It's time to change the way you think about your air filters!

More and more research points to the fact that air quality (and in particular, indoor air quality) is relevant to health issues. Certain organizations are beginning to become aware of the problems and are now taking action to help change indoor life styles. The Wilmington-area schools of Los Angeles are taking action to help improve the indoor air quality of their facilities in 40 of their schools, hoping to reduce indoor air pollution and improve children’s health issues, including asthma.

The schools in this area are subjected to an above average amount of air pollution that is contributed to the surrounding ports where diesel-powered engines of ships, cranes, trucks and trains import goods. Pollution then becomes the trigger of asthma for the children in the schools. To help reduce and alleviate pollution-triggered asthma, the Wilmington-area schools recently won a $5.4 million dollar bid to install air filters – the best know way to improve indoor air quality.

Here’s the tip: help reduce and alleviate your own asthma and poor indoor air quality related health issues by changing your air filters frequently. Not only will changing your air filters improve your indoor air quality by reducing pollutants floating in the air inside your home, you’ll also be reducing other allergens and toxins such as mold, dust and bacteria.

Using the Fresh Air Club air filter delivery program, you’ll never have to worry about the last time you changed your air filter or not changing them regularly enough. Why? Because your home air filters showing up at your door is the BEST reminder to change them. Don’t waste another breath on filthy indoor air, make the change today!
